Public by Design

Day One

KEYNOTE with Trinity Simons Wagner

As we are embarking upon the work of this weekend, can we ask: How do we not return to business as usual? How do we use this moment to create and repair? How do we hold the space for nuance and differences? I for one am inspired by what is happening here this weekend.

— Trinity Simons Wagner, Executive Director of Mayors’ Institute on City Design

Friday morning began with a KEYNOTE presentation from Trinity Simons Wagner, the executive director of the Mayor’s Institute on City Design. She talked about the importance of mayors being the chief urban designers of their cities and the recently-launched Just City Mayoral Fellowship.

Miller Prize: EXPLORE and CONNECT with
Practice for Architecture and Urbanism

We are trying to build communities that are sustainable, attainable and connected. One of the great powers of place is the ability of communities to connect people of different mindsets.

— Vishaan Chakrabarti, Founder of Practice for Architecture and Urbanism

Kicking off on the sidewalk outside the lobby of The Commons, the urban core and site area of Miller Prize Recipient PAU, Symposium participants, community members and City of Columbus staff members gathered along Washington Street for a walk-and-talk with Vishaan Chakrabarti (founder & creative director) and Ruchika Modi (principal) of Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (New York City) and Dave Hayward (City Engineer, City of Columbus Public Works).

What constitutes the greatness of civic life here? What is missing? Who is underrepresented? What role does design play? What is working and what isn’t?

— Vishaan Chakrabarti, Founder of Practice for Architecture and Urbanism

Miller Prize: EXPLORE and CONNECT with PORT

We don’t think in terms of architecture, urban design, or other disciplines. All work is public design work.
